Does It Need To Be Rebuilt?

Not all transmission problems end up as transmission rebuilds. Many shifting problems can be attributed to sticking valves or TV cable out of adjustment. Low fluid level is another common cause of transmission woes, generally brought on by a leak. Newer automatic transmissions are shifted by computer and electronic shift solenoids. When a solenoid fails, your car will not shift properly, if at all.

The most important thing you can do is regularly check your transmission fluid level and have your transmission serviced every 15,000 miles. A car that doesn't move, or that shifts from one gear to what feels like neutral, or that has noise coming from the transmission is probably going to have to have the transmission removed and disassembled for further diagnosis. It is usually at this point that the decision to rebuild or replace the transmission will have to be made.

At AUTOMaster, we will help with that decision. A transmission with a lot of internal damage is sometimes better to replace than to repair. The options usually available are replacing your transmission with a new one, with a remanufactured one or with a used one. We will discuss with you all of your options so that you can make an informed decision.

Why does a transmission need to be replaced?

A transmission being worked on in our shop
The main cause of transmission failure is heat. Over a period of time, the seals in the transmission start to get hard and brittle. When the seals get in this condition, they start to leak. This process happens gradually over time, and because of this condition, the transmission starts to gradually slip.

In the beginning, it isn't noticeable, but it is happening. As the transmission starts to slip, the clutches inside the transmission start to wear out at a faster rate. Everything in an automatic transmission works together, hand in hand with one another, and so when one part starts to fail (in this case, the seals), it always has an affect on another (the clutches).

By the time the delayed engagement or slipping is noticeable to you, it is usually too late for a simple "quick and easy" fix. Once the transmission gets too far along in the process, the only real cure is to rebuild the transmission.

What Is A Basic Rebuild?

The condition described above usually can be repaired with a "basic" rebuild. If a transmission is also making noise, or banging when shifting, the repair goes beyond "basic".

A "basic" rebuild consists of removing your transmission from the vehicle, completely disassembling it, and cleaning and inspecting all the components for wear. The next step is to start assembling the unit, replacing all seals and clutches with new ones. All thrust washers are replaced with new ones, and if the transmission has any bands, they are replaced also. All sealing rings and gaskets are also replaced, as is the filter and torque converter.

Once the internal transmission is assembled and adjusted for proper clearances, the valve body gets disassembled, cleaned and reassembled. If there are any updates, they are done at this time. If your transmission is the newer style, all the solenoids get ohmed out and tested, and if they don't meet spec, they are replaced at this time.

Before the rebuilt transmission is installed back into your vehicle, the transmission cooler lines are thoroughly flushed. After the transmission is installed, it is filled with new Automatic Transmission Fluid, roadtested, and then adjusted as needed. As you can see, it is a time-consuming process, and generally 2 to 3 days are required for a rebuild.

Contact Us!

If you think you may have a transmission problem, please feel free to contact us, or to bring it by and we will diagnose it and give you an estimate. Because the transmission is so complex, however, it is impossible to quote prices over the phone. With so many different transmissions today, one of the most important steps is accurately identifying which transmission you have.
